Over the past 7-8 years, MAF, NAFRI and CIRAD have been testing and adapting Direct Mulch based Cropping technologies and options with farmers in Xayaburyi and Xiengkouang Provinces.
A range of research and scientific information and materials have been produced, but to date there has not been produced an easy to use manual and effective materials on DMC systems and Conservation Agriculture practices for extension agents and farmers. There is a need for exchanging the stories of success and failure from extension agents and farmers. There is also a need to use the experiences and lessons learned from implementation and not just theory. This Multi Media Training Package (MMTP) fills these needs. This package provides an overview of a number of sustainable agriculture technologies and options as opposed to recommending one approach, concept or technology. This set of educational materials is primarily produced for the use by extension agents in Laos.
The multi-media training package consists of the following components: a printed text manual comprising 3 volumes, related film materials, training materials, other related extension materials and an on-line knowledge base on conservation agriculture and DMC systems.

All manuals are based on experiences and knowledge of district staff and researchers. While theory and step-by-step approaches are provided, emphasis is in giving extension agents tips and personal stories of implementation. Manuals are in easy to read language that are geared toward extension agents and avoid academic language. They include large format illustrations and photographs. They also include direct personal stories from farmers and extension agents. In order to make sure the materials are readable and appropriate to extension agents they were tested at the provincial, district and kumban levels (in places where there is and is not knowledge on conservation agriculture). There are two sets of materials. The first is three-volume set on Conservation Agriculture and experiences in Direct Mulch Based Cropping Systems focusing on the following areas. Volume 1: Introduction into CA and SCV and method for implementingVolume 2: Conservation Agriculture and SCV systems Volume 3: Living soils ...

Videos complement the text manuals and provide further information to extension agents. There are two types of films: 1. short clips (max. 1 min.) with testimonials by farmers and extension agents, and 2. longer instructional videos on selected issues (max. 10 min.).
PASS in Xayabury, PRONAE and PROSA in Xiengkouang have created a number of useful training materials, forms and posters which can be directly used for training sessions. Many training materials are developed by teams of CIRAD. Following illustrations (french version) have been developed by Eloïse Grand, Olivier Husson (olivier.husson@cirad.fr) and André Chabanne (andre.chabanne@cirad.fr).
